According to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, 69 percent of Americans support the tax compromise reached by congressional Republicans and the Obama administration.
Majorities support each of the main components of the deal individually, with the (perhaps surprising) exception of the payroll tax cut:
68 percent of Democrats, 68 percent of independents, and 75 percent of Republicans say they support the compromise overall. But perhaps the more interesting measure of who made out in the compromise is provided by taking the average of each group’s support for individual pieces of the plan. When measured this way, Democrats have an average support of just 54 percent, Republicans 61 percent, and independents 52 percent. The numbers break down this way in large part because while Republicans predictably love the tax cuts (85 percent support) and Democrats love the unemployment extension (88 percent support), Democrats hate the tax cuts (38 percent support) much more than Republicans hate the unemployment extension (55 percent support).
