My inbox is still filling up with attacks on NCLB, and I herewith offer one final sample:
My wife teaches at a high school in the SF Bay Area. The new history texts for the semester weigh in at over 7 pounds. The administration believes that that the books are too heavy for the students to carry back and forth from home to school. Therefore, each student will be given two books – one to keep at school and one to keep at home. I call this “No Book Publisher Left Behind.”
NCLB is a disaster. Cheating is rampant. “New and improved” teaching methods have been created by the book publishers along with expensive study guides, teacher’s texts, CD’s, etc. The new methods are only appropriate for teachers who lack any ability to create a lesson plan. For others, creativity will be stifled. My wife is now considered “highly qualified” to teach music, since she was a music major in college. However, she has not taught music in 30 years. I could go on and on. The federal government has no business getting involved in public education.
