The standoff was in its 19th day — which proved its last. The Wisconsin Senate, without notable Democratic participation, has passed an amended version of Governor Walker’s budget. Thanks to the self-imposed exile of 14 Democrats, the Republicans turned the tables by holding a vote without the full force of the opposition. The debate is hardly over, as it now falls to the Assembly. But if the statement from Matt Miller, leader of the Senate Democrats, means anything, Republicans can take heart: “In thirty minutes, 18 [Republican] State Senators undid fifty years of civil rights in Wisconsin.”
