The Liberal Project, Wave One: The Living Constitution

This week on Uncommon Knowledge, Dr. Charles Kesler, professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, Senior Fellow of the Claremont Institute, and editor of the Claremont Review of Books.  Charles will describe the way liberalism became a fixed part of American life, washing across the nation in three distinct waves.  Today, the first wave, which Charles terms “political liberalism.”  A full century ago, Woodrow Wilson began claiming that the Constitution represented a ‘living document.’  Why? Because, like his fellow Progressives, Wilson felt

Impatience with the Constitution and the old forms of American politics, which he regarded as outmoded.

When Justice Scalia decries the Warren Court, in other words, he’s stopping about fifty years short.
