License and Registration, Please

Some new updates on driver’s license security in New York, Maryland, and Ohio. I know the requirements on states imposed by the Real ID Act burn some conservatives (not to mention libertarians), but a modern, urban society cannot function without some system of identification. So the only choices are 1) to have a better system that’s harder to foil, or a lousy one that’s easy to foil, and 2) maintain the decentralized, state-based system we have now, albeit with federal minimum standards, or a centralized, national ID card, which will be part of the Democrats’ default response to a future terrorist attack (as it was after 9/11) unless we tighten the state-based system. In other words, Real ID is the only long-run alternative to a national ID card.
