Lieberman: Democrats Are the Ones Making Netanyahu Speech Partisan, Not GOP

If Democrats want to avoid politicizing Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address before Congress this week, they should be attending the speech, not boycotting it, said former senator Joe Lieberman (I., Conn.).

On Meet the Press, Lieberman, who was joined by Representative Jan Schakowsky (D., Ill.), one of the handful of Democrats who will not attend the speech, chastised his erstwhile party and explained their strategy is backfiring.

“To some extent, the Democrats who are not going are actually making it partisan by their absence,” he said. “If Jan is right and John Boehner is trying to prove Republicans are better friends of Israel, then the way to disprove that is for all the Democrats to go.”

Now, rather than Netanyahu’s visit being about how to address Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, the focus has shifted to which Democrats will attend the speech, Lieberman explained.
