“In the mid-1980s, when I was a card-carrying liberal, I used to admire the anti-Reagan posters that wallpapered Greenwich Village. There was a whole series of them. Tellingly, I can’t remember what they said, but I remember the image of Reagan. It was painted so that he was an ossified mass of deep wrinkles, at once ludicrous and terrifying. The message was that an ancient person was in charge of the most powerful country in the world. Be afraid.
