Katie Couric questioned DNC chair Terry McAuliffe this morning about his wild claim that Bush was “AWOL” from his National Guard service. She quoted RNC chair Ed Gillespie calling him the “John Wilkes Booth of character assassination” and asked what his evidence was. He just prattled about him “not showing up,” but he doesn’t have any evidence of an “AWOL” charge. Couric also asked if he risked a backlash, but didn’t put it just right: Bill Clinton never showed up at all for his ROTC service, so was he disqualified as a CinC?
