Look Who’s Talking

Bulent Arinc, Turkey’s deputy prime minister, says Ankara will scale back ties with Jerusalem. As the flotilla incident focuses attention both on Israel and changes in Turkey, it’s worthwhile considering who’s talking. While speaker of the parliament, Arinc, frustrated at the Constitutional Court’s willingness to veto unconstitutional legislation he and Erdogan sought to put forward, suggested that the AKP could simply abolish the constitutional court. Such is the nature of Erdogan’s democracy.
