Losing, and Blaming the Refs

I have reservations about democracy, along the lines of Churchill’s famous quote. But there’s an iron-clad law of political physics that the party that is complaining loudest about democracy at any given moment is the party that happens to be losing politically at that same moment. (It’s like the complaint about the presidency being too big a job for one person. I used to hear that a lot when I was a kid, during the Carter administration. Somehow you never hear that one during a successful presidency.) I just received an e-mail from The New Republic calling my attention to an article by former Obama budget director Peter Orszag subtitled “Why We Need Less Democracy.”

Michael Barone has a worrisome piece over on the homepage discussing the problems of the Republicans going into 2012, and Barone is never to be taken lightly. But it looks like the other side sees itself as losing — and, for what it’s worth, I think they’re right.
