Lost Art

Numerous readers:  “What the %$*&!@# is a diseuse?”

“A female professional entertainer who performs monologues”–Dictionary.com.  That’s close enough, though it doesn’t catch the full flavor of a good diseuse performance.  It’s a lost art, is no longer done… though you occasionally get glimpses of it in stand-up comedy.

I don’t know of any American instances, though I’m sure there must have been some.  Bob Newhart used to do diseur routines–I think his famous one-end-of-a-phone-conversation pieces qualify, anyway.
