The Lost Art of Negative Campaign Ads?

One amazing thing about this presidential cycle on both sides is that there hasn’t been much in the way of negative campaign ads, except for those run by Romney. His ads in Iowa against Huckabee were quite tame by historical standards and so were his anti-McCain ads in New Hampshire (especially the incredibly lame man-on-the-street ad). The Democrats haven’t been on TV with negative ads at all. Is negative advertising becoming a lost art in presidential politics? Wouldn’t there have been a time when this Romney web ad against McCain (“The Democrats’ Favorite Republican“) would have been slickly produced and up on the airwaves?
