Mr. Goldberg:

Living in Illinois, I was among those few souls lucky enough to hear Larouche ads this election go-around. In those radio ads, he referred to Dick Cheney and John Ashcroft as (to my best recollection) “followers of Carl Schmitt, a disciple of Leo Strauss, who was influential in the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany”. Reading your essay revealed the irony in all of this, although I couldn’t help remarking to a friend that it was refreshing in a strange way to hear a politician who assumed that the public at large knew or cared who Leo Strauss was . . .
