I’ve gotten several notes from readers on the Geithner tax story. Here’s the problem, as they see it. There’s no doubt that the IMF exmployees’ tax structure was a little complicated. But if the IRS, in 2006, informed Geithner that he had a problem for the years 2003 and 2004, how come he didn’t go back and look to see if he had made the same error in 2001 and 2002? It turns out he had, but how come that was only discovered in late November 2008, at pretty much precisely the time Geithner was nominated to be Treasury Secretary? According to the account released by the Obama transition, Geithner owed $25,970 for 2001 and 2002, which is more than he had to pay for the 2003 and 2004 mistakes. It’s something that needs clearing up.
