There’s something that newly minted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani forgot to warn his supporters about as he was promising to be Santa Claus and fulfill their every need and whim: The city is broke. His ambitions to make buses free, among other pledges to subsidize more social services, are handicapped by the city’s tight budget. He may chalk it up to forces beyond his control, but I’m not so sure his voters, begging for relief in one of the most expensive cities in America, will be so forgiving.
