Manchin Calls on Reid, Obama to Work with Republicans to Avoid Debt ‘Crash’

West Virginia Democratic senator Joe Manchin called on Senate majority leader Harry Reid and President Obama to reach out to Republicans on reducing the nation’s debt, lest the red-ink continue, precipitating an economic “crash.”

Manchin, on CNN’s State of the Union, frankly conceded that Obama’s lack of outreach to congressional officials of both parties has hurt his legislative proposals. Obama is not a “gregarious” person like Bill Clinton, and his lack of relationship with senators makes it easier for them to turn down his entreaties, Manchin said, adding that Obama should ask himself “what his legacy will be?” and imploring him to work with Republicans to avoid a debt “crash.”

From Reid, Manchin said he wanted to see “more of an engaging” style.

Earlier in the interview, Manchin said the disclosures about the NSA’s keeping five years of phone records from every American meant “we found out that Big Brother is truly watching you.”
