Marie Antoinette, Please Report to the Next Romney Fundraiser

In this morning’s Washington Post, reporter Philip Rucker has a story about Mitt Romney’s response to criticism of his remarks about the 47 percent of Americans who do not pay income tax:

Romney addressed reporters from a room deep inside the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, where upstairs hundreds of his supporters were standing around elegantly appointed tables swilling wine and awaiting the candidate’s remarks at a fund-raiser. Tickets cost as much as $50,000 per person, and the campaign said it raised $4 million at the events.

Wine-swilling fat-cat Republicans (are there any other kind?), with their elegantly appointed tables, waiting for the appearance of a candidate who believes poor and needy people are best helped by a growing economy — it’s enough to make a Post reporter lose his objectivity. Let the tumbrels roll!

But at least Romney now has a choice of slogans to answer critics who say he is losing the race:

“Where’s there’s a swill, there’s a way!”

“Triumph of the Swill”

“Wine-swillers of America, unite — you have nothing to lose but your cheap Merlot!”
