State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf doubled down on her claim that the United States “cannot kill our way out of this war” with the Islamic State, telling CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that her remark was perhaps “too nuanced” for some to grasp.
On Tuesday night, Harf responded to the critics mocking her assertion that America must work to ensure economic and political opportunity for Islamic terrorists.
“We cannot kill every terrorist around the world, nor should we try,” she said. “How do we get at the root causes of this? Look, it might be too nuanced an argument for some — like I’ve seen over the last 24 hours, some of the commentary out there — but it’s really the smart way that Democrats, Republicans, military commanders, our partners in the Arab world, think we need to combat this.”
Contrary to the spokeswoman’s assertion, many Islamic terrorists have historically come from wealthy backgrounds. Osama bin Laden was the well-educated son of a Saudi oil magnate, and the 2005 London bombers came from well-to-do British immigrant families and possessed large bank accounts the day they blew themselves up.
