Marist Poll: 60 Percent of Americans Oppose Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

A New Marist poll sponsored by the Knights of Columbus asked American adults: “Do you strongly support, support, oppose, or strongly oppose using tax dollars to pay for a woman’s abortion?”

The results: 60 percent are opposed or strongly opposed to taxpayer funding of abortion, while 40 percent support or strongly support it.

Despite the backlash over the Dobbs decision, those numbers are roughly in line with where they were throughout the Trump presidency. The results are actually better for the pro-life side than they were when the Marist/KOFC released its last poll in January 2022, at which time only 54 percent opposed or strongly opposed taxpayer funding of abortion.

Republican congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey says that the House will vote in the next few weeks on his bill to permanently apply the Hyde amendment, which bans federal funding of abortion except in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger.
