March 20 (Bloomberg ) — Town councilors say they were just trying to let immigrants know what to expect if they move to the Quebec village of Herouxville: Stoning of women won’t be tolerated, while alcohol and Christmas trees are socially acceptable.
Instead, the 1,137-word code of conduct that the council unanimously approved brought global notoriety. The Canadian Islamic Congress accused the town of “hate-mongering,’’ while supporters of the code said it’s time that politicians stop sacrificing traditions to placate immigrants.
“We are not racist,’’ said Lise Lajoie, 52, who works at a fabric-repair company, Centre de Couture D.F., in Herouxville. “It’s up to the immigrants to adapt to the Quebec way of life, not the other way around.’’
