Following George Zimmerman’s acquittal, an attorney for the family of Trayvon Martin told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren that she feels “a greater duty beyond being an attorney, and that’s to be a social engineer.”

Jasmine Rand, the attorney, criticized the jury that found Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Martin because they failed to properly considered the evidence. Van Susteren responded by asking whether she thought “they can’t do their job?”

“I have a greater duty beyond being an attorney, and that’s to be a social engineer,” Rand said. “When the law doesn’t get it right, I believe that we have the right to peacefully, and morally, conscientiously object to the decision of the jury.”

Van Susteren, an attorney herself, called her response “deeply disturbing” and criticized Rand for “social manipulation” rather than social engineering. She explained that juries are in a better position to know the facts of a case than the general public.

“That’s why we have court systems, is so that both sides have an opportunity to be heard,” Van Susteren said. “But actually justice is presented in the courtroom with the jury deciding it and both sides having an opportunity.”
