Lt. Col. Jim Ogonowski (R) is making an unexpectedly spirited challenge to Niki Tsongas (D) for the fifth district seat recently vacated by Rep. Marty Meehan (D-Mass.). The election is October 16.
Republican registration in the district is 14 percent (yes, you’re reading that correctly, one-four) but Ogonowski is trailing Paul Tsongas’s widow by just ten points in a public poll, ten points in Republican internal polls, and supposedly just five points in an internal Democratic poll.
If there is a way for Republicans to win, it is to campaign against Washington, as an outsider — as Ogonowski has done. He probably won’t win, but he’ll come very close for this district. He’s already given Tsongas a shock.
