Matthews: GOP the Party of Jefferson Davis

MSNBC host Chris Matthews is at it again: While speaking with Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee yesterday about his recent switch to the Democratic party, Matthews said today’s Republican party is the home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis.

Chafee said that his decision to switch from a Republican to an independent in 2010 was because “the southerners were taking over the party” while he, as well as his father, were in the Senate. “The shift occurred down to the South,” Chafee said. “They just had a different view of what the Republican party should be.”

“So Jefferson Davis didn’t win the war between the states — the Civil War if you will — but he did win the Republican party,” Matthew replied. “This is weird.”

Davis was a Democratic senator from Mississippi before becoming the president of the Confederate States of America.
