MAYBE ALLEN VS. WEBB IN SWIMSUITS AND BOOTS

Some critics have accused the Washington Post of a certain amount of wishful thinking in its campaign coverage, of taking a political situation that is already quite favorable for Democrats and trying in sometimes novel ways — remember the 1,302-word story about George Allen’s cowboy boots? — to make it even better. That is completely unfair. Today’s front-page article, “Democratic Faces That Could Launch Thousands of Votes; With a Parade of Attractive Candidates, the Party May Benefit From the Politics of Beauty,” which includes the passage

By a combination of luck and design, Democrats seem to be fielding an uncommonly high number of uncommonly good-looking candidates. The beauty gap between the parties, some on Capitol Hill muse, could even be a factor in who controls Congress after Election Day.

is a work of straight-down-the-middle journalism, and no one should suggest otherwise.
