Earlier I noted that McCain had lost by seven points among self-identified conservatives, possibly showing trouble to come. Noam Scheiber points out that McCain won among “somewhat conservative” voters while getting creamed among “very conservative” voters, who made up 34 percent of the electorate in South Carolina’s Republican primary. I agree that those results make his picture brighter.
