McCain Calls Ahmadinejad a Space Monkey, GOP Rep. Slams McCain for ‘Racist Joke’

In a tweet earlier today, Arizona senator John McCain tacitly called Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a space monkey; now, McCain is fielding accusations of racism. 

Reacting to news of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s ambition to be the first Iranian launched into space, McCain jokingly asked on Twitter, “Wasn’t he just there last week?” McCain was referring to Iran’s claim last week that it had successfully sent a monkey into space. 

McCain’s remark did not sit will with many in the Twitterverse, who proceeded to lambaste him for his allegedly racist remark. McCain’s critics included Justin Amash, a GOP representative of Palestinian and Syrian descent, who took to Twitter to respond to the senator’s request that his critics “lighten up.” Amash advised McCain to “wisen up & not make racist jokes.”
