McCain for Enzi: ‘He’s a Hard-Working Workhorse’

John McCain declared today that he’ll support his colleague Mike Enzi of Wyoming over his newly announced challenger, former deputy assistant secretary of state Liz Cheney. “He’s a good, solid, hard-working workhorse. You know the old line about showhorses and workhorses. Mike Enzi is the epitome of a workhorse in the Senate.”

When asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley whether Cheney’s run suggests just about any sitting senator could be challenged from the right, McCain acknowledged the issue, but said, “it’s a free country and a free party, mind you — if people want to run for office, they can.” He noted that most senators have stood by Enzi so far, though, saying, “I’m pleased to see most people who have served with Mike Enzi have expressed our strong support” for him.

McCain had previously said on Friday that he would be open to campaigning for Enzi, who held a substantial lead, 55 percent to Cheney’s 21 percent, in the only poll of the race released so far.
