Though he is one of the most vocal advocates of intervention in Syria, Senator John McCain said Wednesday that he would not support the Senate’s latest draft of a resolution authorizing the use of force. McCain’s stance may get in the way of the Obama administration’s desire to quickly win support in Congress for a strike.
McCain said that the current Senate resolution, which limits U.S. involvement to 90 days and stipulates that no American troops can be sent to Syria, is too limited; he prefers an intervention that goes beyond cruise-missile strikes and “limited action.” McCain wants a U.S. intervention to push the momentum of the civil war in favor of Assad, and doesn’t think a limited strike will accomplish this goal.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will meet again Wednesday morning to amend their new draft resolution.
