The speculation has turned decidedly negative on McCarthy’s fate this afternoon. I thought some Democratic present votes or absences might bail him out, and maybe that will still happen. But Democrats as a whole are going to happily vote against him — and why not? Outside of their particular problems with McCarthy, if given the opportunity to watch the opposing party collapse into what could be a week-long bout of chaos, what self-respecting party wouldn’t take the opportunity?
