An obnoxious heading, I know. At any rate, I have an Impromptus on last night’s debate today, and here is one of the points:
[Newt] talks about “reducing income inequality in America by 50 percent.” Okay. But . . . I hope the rich get richer and the poor get richer. And if that widens income inequality, so be it.
Does that mean I eat puppies? (Only when they’re properly sautéed.)
It just so happens that, a few days ago, a friend of mine sent me this clip, which shows Margaret Thatcher in the Commons in the very last days of her premiership. She makes the same point (inimitably): To hell with the gap, how are the poor doing, along with society as a whole?
