The Corner

Memory Lane

The current issue of National Review has the word “Bedfellows” on the cover. (It depicts Obama in bed with Big Business.) And this reminded me of one of the most delightful stories in politics. It’s 1940, and Wendell Willkie is the Republican presidential nominee. He is having a flagrant affair (with Irita Van Doren). A photog snaps a picture of Willkie and his wife, Edith. As he is doing so, the stoic wife quips, “Politics makes strange bedfellows.”

“Too good to check,” as they say.
