‘Men Identifying as Women’

From a recent Times of London report on trans-identifying prison populations:

Brookes disclosed that, as of January, there were 12 transgender prisoners in custody: nine transgender women and three transgender men. Five of the transgender women — men identifying as women — were in women’s prisons, and two transgender men — women identifying as men — were in the men’s estate, Brookes said.

Look closely at those added descriptions. Men identifying as women. . . . Women identifying as men. . . . This is the plain truth that the terms “transgender women” and “transgender men” seek to obscure. Without the parentheticals, the objection to the prison placement of these trans-identifying prisoners is hard to understand. (Why shouldn’t one kind of woman be housed with another kind of woman?) With the parentheticals, it’s hard not to understand.

It’s worth mentioning that the Times of London is a liberal-leaning newspaper.
