It is difficult not to get the impression that the man is in over his head. I talked with a GOP operative type yesterday with familiarity with Steele who said “I don’t know where that came from” in reference to the Rush nonsense. This source suggested the issue may be that the man has no communications team. I suspect that’s a start–one gets the impression–which may or may not be true–that Steele is currently a bit of a lone soldier while a newbie at the head of a defeated party that needs leadership, organization, and a coherent vision (and if he’s not a lone soldier he’s either not getting or not taking good advice). Unfortunately, if his judgment is as poor as recent history suggests, it’s going to take a miracle of a communications team to fix this problem. Nazis? That’s not a communications issue, that’s a judgment issue.
