One of Democrats’ top Senate candidates this year stumbled when asked whether she supports Obamacare. Michelle Nunn, who is running for an open seat in Georgia, repeatedly dodged questions about whether she would have voted for the controversial and unpopular health-care law.
“I wish that we had more people who had tried to architect a bipartisan legislation,” Nunn initially told MSNBC, noting that she was working for nonprofit Points of Light at the time of the law’s crafting, in 2009 and 2010.
When asked for a yes-or-no answer, Nunn sidestepped the question. “I think it’s impossible to look back retrospectively and say what would you have done while you were there,” she said.
After playing the interview, the Morning Joe panel panned Nunn for her lackluster effort, calling it a “terrible answer” and saying she “doesn’t come across as credible.” In a more extended version of the interview than what aired, Nunn said she wouldn’t vote to repeal the law and supports a number of specific tweaks to it.
Nunn is considered one of the best candidates for Democrats to take a Republican-held Senate seat this fall. The daughter of former Georgia senator Sam Nunn, she’s expected to triumph easily in the party’s May 20 primary and has polled competitively with the Republicans vying for their party’s nomination.
