Michigan Democrat senator Carl Levin announced today that he will retire after his current term ends. And while Mitt Romney didn’t win Michigan in the presidential election, currently the state’s governor, Rick Snyder, is Republican, and both the state house and senate have Republican majorities, suggesting that it may be possible for a GOP candidate to pick up the seat.
There has been speculation about a bid by Justin Amash, the libertarian Republican representing the state’s third congressional district. Senate Conservatives Fund executive director Matt Hoskins said Amash “has an impressive record and we’d love to see him run,” although he also stressed that the Fund had made no decision on who to endorse, but wanted to see strong conservatives in the race.
