In my column yesterday, I praised Governor Sununu for, among other things, his exemplary English. I mentioned that he said, “That’s one of those ideas that are . . .” (This was during a session on NR’s cruise last week.) Not many get that formulation right. WFB used to insist on it. But it’s rather a lost cause (like many good things).
Among our passengers was a retired New York Times editor. She writes me,
I felt like applauding when I heard Sununu say that. Like the time on a National Review cruise when a young man — alas, I don’t remember his name, but he worked at the magazine — used “beg the question” properly.
A miracle. Minor, but miraculous all the same.
