John Fund’s post below reminded me of something: It was he who concentrated my mind on the Greek problem a few years ago. He had seen men in Greece, leaving their homes in coat and tie, pretending to their families that they still had a job. He saw them scrounging through garbage cans. He saw them ordering hot water in eateries, and squeezing ketchup packets into it to make a kind of soup.
In the 2012 campaign, Mitt Romney warned about being on “the road to Greece.” He was dismissed and scorned by Democrats and others as a rich businessman — a “vulture capitalist,” Rick Perry called him — who knew nothing about ordinary people and didn’t care about them. Barack Obama, by contrast, was for compassion, fairness, social justice.
Over the last few years, I’ve been saying, “There’s nothing compassionate about economic collapse. It is brutal. There is nothing fair or just or kind about it. It is cruel and monstrous.”
Mitt knew. He’s a good man, and a discerning one. His defamers, if they had any shame, should hang their heads in it.
