Mitt’s Handicap

In state after state — New Hampshire, Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, etc. — Romney is beating Santorum among Catholic voters, and beating him soundly. Among evangelicals, Romney is doing less well.

Still, I wonder whether Romney’s religion would prove as big a handicap in the general as people think — or fear or hope.

One problem for him, I think, will be the not drinking. That, Americans tend to have a hard time forgiving.

Conservatives don’t like to hear it, but drunkenness, adultery, divorce, and abortion are as American as apple pie. In fact, more American. And more American than baseball, which is losing ground to soccer all the time.

Suing is all-American too. One could go on . . .
