More Abortions, More Taxpayer Dollars, and Fewer Health Services

On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood released its 2023 annual report. Its annual reports continue to be an extremely useful source of data for pro-lifers. They consistently provide solid evidence that Planned Parenthood continues to prioritize abortion. Overall, this new report shows that Planned Parenthood performed 392,715 abortions in 2022. This is a record number of abortions for the organization and represents approximately 40 percent of the abortions performed in the United States.

The report also indicates that Planned Parenthood continues to cut back on several health services. Between 2022 and 2023, preventive-care visits fell by 31.0 percent, pap tests fell by 13.5 percent, cancer screenings fell by 1.4 percent, and adoption referrals fell by 4.5 percent. Interestingly, for every adoption referral in 2023, Planned Parenthood performed over 228 abortions.

All of this is consistent with Planned Parenthood’s long-term trend of performing more abortions and providing fewer health services. In fact, in the past ten years, the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood has increased by 20 percent. Meanwhile, cancer screenings fell by more than 58 percent, and prenatal services declined by more than 67 percent.

Although Planned Parenthood cut back on several health services in 2022, it continues to receive increases in government funding. The report indicates that in 2023 it received $699.3 million in government grants and reimbursements. This is a significant, 4.2 percent increase from 2022. This is unsurprising, since the Biden administration quickly repealed the Trump administration’s Protect Life rule, making them eligible for millions of dollars in Title X grants.

Planned Parenthood wants to be viewed as a health-care provider and not an abortion clinic. Their spokespeople frequently cite the misleading statistic that abortion represents only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services. However, these annual reports provide a much different — and more much accurate — narrative. Planned Parenthood continues to perform more abortions while providing fewer health-care services. This is helpful information as pro-lifers continue our efforts to defund Planned Parenthood at both the state and the federal levels.
