More Big Love

One more point about “Big Love.” Is the family portrayed really

Christian? Is it Mormon? Is it “fundamentalist Mormon” (a term considered

a misnomer by the Mormon Church)? Apparently the show leaves all this

somewhat vague. Frankly I don’t think it matters. Big Love is not really

about either documenting or dramatizing the lives of religious sectarians

in Utah. It’s about challenging the American notion of the family by using

characters of unspecified religiosity as a kind of cover. Who’s kidding

who here? With this show, Hollywood is taking a swipe at many more folks

than just Mormons.
