That’s how I’m feeling about Washington at the moment when it comes to lobbying/spending reform. I wrote about it yesterday. In my mind, one difference between the push for campaign finance reform a couple of years ago and now is that today we are talking about real corruption and real special interests. The CFR-niks used to tell us that campaign ads on TV were corrupting. But political ads on TV are, broadly speaking, a good thing. They used to say spending by the political parties was corrupting. Again, a good thing. They used to call groups like National Right to Life and the NRA special interests. They are, of course, but they (and their liberal counterparts) are good special interests–they are defending legitimate policies and points of view. In contrast to all this, a rail magnate who gives a congressman lots of money so he can slip a measure into a bill helping his business is a truly grubby special interest engaging in a process that is truly corrupting. It’s disgusting…
