More Memory Lane re UNESCO

Got a note from José Sorzano, regarding a post below (here). He writes, 

I was Ambassador Kirkpatrick’s deputy in New York when we pulled out of UNESCO. The data you heard Ambassador Walters mention is the slam-dunk response we used to answer the charge that by pulling out of UNESCO the U.S. was dashing the hopes and aspirations of destitute “widows and orphans” around the world. If we still got push-back, we then pointed out that Mr. M’Bow lived on the penthouse floor of UNESCO’s Paris headquarters and, to keep the floor heated or air conditioned during the weekends, it was necessary to do so for the entire building.

 Nice. They tend to live large, those U.N.-ers – on Jesse Helms’s dime (so to speak).
