More Polygamy

John, it’s not just Asians and Africans. There are tenacious communities of Mormon schismatics practicing polygamy throughout the American west, with off shoots in Mexico and Canada. Perhaps one has to spend some time in Utah, as I did last year, to get a sense their off-stage presence, and of their relation to a larger community in which they are now pariahs, but which they claim (with some plausibility) to authentically represent. Their relative invisibility in the current debate over marriage shows, yet again, the class blinders, based on religion and, in this case, geography, that our debating classes wear.
