More Like the Wild West

The assassination of President Karzai’s half brother demonstrates what so many want to ignore: Afghanistan has much more in common with the old wild west in the United States than a modern state under the rule of law. The killing was a bold stroke that not only raises questions about whether the Afghan government can protect the Afghan people as the Americans leave but whether it can even protect itself. It is a corrupt government. Loyalty is rented, not permanent. It is not the first assassination, it will not be the last.
