The Corner

Most Famous

Readers are objecting to my characterization of Hillary Clinton as one of the three most famous people ever to run for president, next to Eisenhower and Grant. What about George Washington? What about Andrew Jackson? Come on, people. Washington and Jackson existed in the age before any form of mass communication. By the time Grant came on the scene, there were newspapers, telegraphy, railroads, all of which were ways of spreading news and fame far beyond the way in which it had spread before. And all that pales beside the 20th century mass media.
