The Corner

Mr. President PLEASE READ THIS!

Three weeks ago, along with five other columnists, I met President Bush in the Oval Office for 90 minutes. All of us were “friendlies” (including Kate O’Beirne and Rich Lowry) and yet, conversation kept circling back to the question of troops. Several of us – some more elliptically than others – suggested that the President really needs to SEND MORE TROOPS TO IRAQ. At first, he was dismissive; certain that his generals and his defense secretary would tell him if more troops were the answer. But as the meeting wore on, he opened up a tiny window by suggesting that, well, yes, he might just ask General Casey whether another division in Baghdad would help.

Today’s WSJ carries a plea from an infantry officer far more eloquent than anything we could say. I really pray the president reads it.
