The Corner

The Multifaceted Mark Helprin

For the last few weeks, we have been offering episodes in The Human Parade, with Jay Nordlinger. We have posted three episodes — and they have featured Ed Koch, Jeb Bush, and Bernard Lewis. (For a “sampler” of the series at large, go here.) This week’s episode brings us Mark Helprin, the novelist, policy analyst, and other things. He is the author of Winter’s Tale and A Soldier of the Great War, among other blockbuster novels. His latest is In Sunlight and in Shadow. Jay interviewed him at the Helprin home outside Charlottesville, Va., in July 2011. They talked over many subjects: the literary life, political life, and life in general.

Helprin has contributed to NR from time to time — including to our special issue on missile defense, published in February 1999.
