Kinda off on a tangent from some of Ramesh’s recent Corner posts: Our family movie (courtesy of Netflix) this weekend was My Left Foot
the 1989 Daniel Day-Lewis movie (I mean, he starred) about the life of Christy Brown, the severely disabled Irish writer who wrote and painted with his left foot. We failed to notice when ordering that it is “R” rated, for a few scattered occurrences of the f-word, but we let the kids go on watching anyway because they were engaged with the story. There was nothing else objectionable, though I had to translate a few terms (“gobshite,” “knickers,”…). My daughter especially was transfixed by the movie. Wonderful evocation of working-class life in postwar Dublin, excellent Irish faces, voices, and interiors. Great fight scene. One of our best recent rentals.
