The Mystery of Performance

About last night’s odd, long, and wonderful baseball game, Daniel Murphy, a Met, said, “Yeah, there was a lot of baseball out there.” (For an account of the game, and that Murphy comment, go here.) Artur Rubinstein, the late pianist, once said of the Schubert sonatas, “They are full of music.”

On the subject of music: I have a post — more like an article — at The New Criterion on James Levine, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director; Tannhäuser, the Wagner opera; and the mystery of performance. Something for everyone, maybe. Give it a try, here.
