Took five sixth-graders to see it yesterday (happy birthday, my sweet
son). We all loved it from start to finish. I found in discussion
afterward that the character of Edmund was the most interesting,
because “it’s harder to be good when you’re kind of bad,” as one boy
put it. And aren’t we all kind of bad? These Jewish day school boys
were all less troubled by overt Christian themes than they were by the
persistent worry that some kissing might break out. And the greatest
praise of all was saved for the trailer of “Pirates of the Caribbean
II,” which evoked a small “whoo!” from the only grown-up in the group.
